Can I Have Better Health and CARE?

Too often, all of us question whether there is a way to feel better and be healthier or if this is the way things are going to always be in life? A few changes may help you feel better and lower your weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Huge changes are not always necessary. Remember, we all learned to walk with baby steps. Keep asking your questions and seeking answers until you get it right and the answers you want and need. You do not need to accept the first answer or the statement, “Do as I say and you will be fine” when a healthcare provider makes this remark.
As a nurse practitioner, I receive notices from some insurance companies when patients have not refilled the prescribed medications, had their annual eye exam, colonoscopy, or other laboratory procedures. There may be a reason the patient has not gotten their refills or procedures, and I must follow up on these notices with patients. Patients have the right to make an educated refusal and/or make an alternative choice with the provider and have it documented in their medical records. The insurance companies following up with these notices help keep healthcare costs down, maintain government guidelines, and avoid possible legal issues.
You also have the right to procedures, laboratory analysis, diagnostics, and medications that the insurance will not cover. You may be responsible for the cost as an out of pocket expense. However, again, you have the right to choose your own health care, seek out options, and have what you wish, need and want.
